The WallStreetBets Glossary

WallStreetBets: a subreddit dedicated to stock trading, where members mostly focus on oddball stocks Wall Street hates: like AMC and GameStop.

Ape: A retail investor that buys meme stocks. They tend to be influenced by ideas emanating from the online wallstreetbets community.

Hedgie: large institutional investors that aggressively short the stocks the WallStreetBets community supports.

Meme Stock: a controversial stock loved by apes and hated by hedgies.

Apes Together Strong: a rallying cry for the wallstreetbets community. It was first said by Caesar, the hero in the new “Planet of the Apes” trilogy.

Bears/Shorts: investors, typically institutions, that believe a stock or stocks will go down.

Short Squeeze: an odd situation where a heavily shorted stock starts rising, forcing shorts to cover, which generates even more upside momentum. Related: What is a short squeeze?

Going to the Moon: A call that a stock is going to the moon.

YOLO: stands for “You Only Live Once.” The popular phrase from the early 2010s is a rallying cry for meme investors that are hesitant to pull the trigger. “You only live once make the trade” is a common comment on meme stock pages.

Stonks: Casual vocabulary for stocks and often includes a claim that stocks only go up. (not actually true!)

Rockets: When a meme investor wants the stock to fly up

Silverback: A dominant, gorilla usually the leader of the pack. This title was rewarded to Adam Aron the CEO of AMC as a nickname.

Diamond Hands: Continuing to hold a stock even if the trader is taking huge losses because they are confident that the stock price will increase in the future. 

Paper Hands: this is when a trader sells their stock into weakness instead of holding on.

Tendies: another word for cash. if a trader has made money, they have gained tendies and vice versa if they lose money.

Hold the Line: Used when there is volatility in the market to prevent retail investors from selling off.
